First of all, I do not have a proper study routine and I
still have a lot more to improve. However, I’d like to share what I always do
when it comes to studying and exams that I have done up until now. These tips
are what I am most compatible with and may not work on others as different
people have different styles of studying. I personally tried a lot of tips
given for various people but failed to follow most of them. So, don’t worry if
you haven’t found the perfect studying style for yourself and never give up on
trying to find one. Each and every one of us have their own unique ways of
studying. So without further rambling, let’s start with the first tip!
1.
NO TIMETABLE/SCHEDULE
What? No timetable? Yes. I did not have a
specific timetable for myself. Like I said I tried many tips and this is one of
them that did not work out. But have you ever heard of the saying ‘If you
fail to plan, you plan to fail’ ……or something like that. A bit scary yes. However
that does not mean I did not plan my day. I just couldn’t bring myself to
follow timetables and schedules except for attending classes because I always
end up forgetting to follow one and getting bored or felt like I’m a robot that
has to follow instructions. So what did I do? I’d just roughly plan my day in my
head or write down what things that I have to get done by the day. That way, my
time for doing things is more flexible and I feel less stressed. It helps a lot
if I write down all the things to be done because I turn out to be a bit clumsy
and always forgetting things so by writing it I could at least remember it
better and can track what’s more that needs to be done.
2.
TRY TO ALWAYS HELP OTHER
PEOPLE
Or in other words, don’t be stingy with
your knowledge or what we usually refer as ‘kedekut ilmu’. Turns out
that if you teach someone something, you’ll actually understand and remember it
better. So, it’s actually a win-win situation. Helping others does not only
applies on their studies, but also, helping them in small and simple things
like, giving them a ride, hear their troubles, or even offering a simple smile.
These things may not have any relation to studying but at least, by making
others happy or helping them, you’ll feel much better for yourself. You might
not get it, but why don’t giving in a try.
3.
HAVE GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH
LECTURERS
Haha typical students right? Well believe
it or not, this is actually also very important. Sometimes you’ll be in one of
those classes where the lecturer teaches about 700 students and they never
notice you. Well, by having a ‘good’ relationship with them also means you are
not to cause any troubles like always coming in late to class (until the
lecturer notices you), not handing in assignments on time, not paying attention
in class. Well I need not to explain any further because we are all humans and
by actually being in universities and schools we should probably know what is
wrong and what is wrong to do. One tip from me is to never badmouth you
lecturers. Just keep your opinions to yourself. Although sometimes it may slip
through our mouths accidentally, but we must realise that lecturers are just
like us, human beings, and people make mistakes all the time.
4.
NEVER SAY THAT STUDYING IS
HARD
Yes there are subjects that are killers and
hard or subjects where the lecturers didn’t pay attention to class and you
cannot understand one single thing. But you must never have a mind-set that
something is hard or tough or boring or uninteresting. Believe me that it’ll
really affect your study mood and you’ll never want to revise on that subject
until the last minute. Always make effort on your studies and never take things
to lightly. There are people the same age as us out there that wants to study
like us but are unfortunate and couldn’t afford to. So never take you place studying
in universities or colleges lightly because someone out there are dying to have
what you have.
5.
TAKE A NAP
Never study too hard until the point where
you can’t even see the writings on your book because you are too sleepy. If
that ever happens, take a short quality nap, and then continue studying again.
In some cases, coffee might help. But unfortunately, not for me because coffee
either makes me sleepy, not able to sleep even though I’m sleepy af, or have no
effect at all. So napping always helps. But just to take precautions, even if
you are taking a 5 or 10 minutes nap, just set your alarm because there is a
90% possibility that you might nap for hours.
6.
DON’T STRESS TOO MUCH
There is no place in this world where you are
studying with 0 stress. Even in living your life you will have to go through
different kinds of problems and hardships. So there is nothing wrong about
being stressed out. You just need to not give yourself up to your stress,
manage yourself, and get yourself out of that situation as soon as you can. Whenever
I am feeling lifeless during studying (which happens a lot), I’d go out from my
room and do other stuffs like cleaning(yeah right), eating out, walking, or go
window shopping just to focus on something else instead of studying. I also
change my studying place a lot because I get bored easily. Fun fact, back in
college I was staying at my hostel which was an apartment kind of with 3 rooms.
Each of us are given our own studying table but I rarely study on mine. Well I
have my books and my stuffs on my table but I usually study elsewhere like my
bed (not a good place), the sofa, my small study table that I can move around,
library, empty classes, the mosque, or even my friends’ desks. There was a
point where my friend didn’t even know which one my table was because I was
always changing tables. :D
7.
KNOW YOURSELF
You should learn to learn more about yourself
and know your limits and everything. Learn more about yourself and always
appreciate yourself. Never underestimate yourself because if you do, you are
doubting yourself. Like I said, every each one of us, we are unique, we have
our own capabilities, stories, and paths. We would always cross paths with
other people but our paths would never be forever the same. Comparing ourselves
to others is a good thing until you doubt yourself. If you compare yourself to
others, it should motivate you to become better, not losing confidence. Just
believe that ANYTHING is possible if you put your heart to it. Just believe in
our God that he’ll take us to the right path and guide us if we ever get lost.
InShaAllah, we are all born on this world with a reason. We just have to find
it.
